ANNIE CHISWELL, thirteenth and last of the children born to Richard and Sophie Chiswell who lived in Hawkesmouth Cottage, Kings Head Hill, Chingford arrived on 12 January, 1906.
She was mainly looked after by her sister Ethel who made a mistake in commenting on her mother’s pregnant condition before Annie arrived. Punishment for being “saucy” was looking after Annie. As Annie grew she decided she did not like her name and persuaded all to call her Nancy which suited her very well. Nancy came to Australia with the family when she was 14 years of age (1920) travelling by ship. Her father, Richard died about 6 months after arriving in Australia. Her mother then went to live with son - Dick and Nancy boarded with her sister Alice in Waterview Street. Alice was married to Arthur Dutch, had one son Paddy. Art Chiswell, Nancy’s brother also boarded with Alice. Nancy went to school only until she was 12 years of age. When she came to Sydney she worked at Wetherby’s shoe factory where she helped with the making of shoes. She was always very capable at making things. She met Jack Simpson while watching her brothers and cousins play soccer. Jack was a very good soccer player and enjoyed playing with all the Chiswell boys. Nancy and Jack were married at the Methodist Church, The Avenue, Hurstville on 12th October, 1935 and settled down to married life in a house they had built at 84 St. Georges Parade, Hurstville. Their son, John was born on 2nd March, 1938, followed by a daughter Judith on 17th November, 1940. John married Sharyn Burke on 10th April, 1970. They had 5 children, 4 girls, Lisa born 1st June, 1972, Monique born 22nd February, 1974, Rachelle born 5th February, 1976, Natasha born 23rd April, 1979 and son Greg born 11th September, 1985. Lisa married Ross Lewin on 11th December1999.Lisa & Ross have one son Charles born 22 May 2003 & four daughters from Ross’ first marriage being Georgina,Holly,Annie,& Antonia. Monique married Andrew Stuckey on 21 August, 2004. Judith married Ulrich Teichert on 15thNovember 1963 and moved to South Australia in 1965. They had three children - two daughters - Stephanie born 1st June, 1966, Christine born 22nd January, 1968 and a son Peter born 12th September, 1969. Stephanie married Garry Bettison on 29th January, 1989 and has two sons Thomas and Michael. Christine married Glenn Statham on 24th February, 1996 - Glenn has two daughters from a previous marriage. Peter married Sarah Dunn on 10th June, 2000 and have one daughter Kaitlin. |
