Dear Family,
On 26th July 1852 the good ship SS Irene sailed from England, on
board were James and Mary Derwent with their two young children, Martha and
Andrew Binns Derwent, hoping to find a new and better life in South Australia.
For some reason the family changed their destination to Sydney, landing in October 1852 to start their new life.
150 YEARS IN AUSTRALIA
Our research shows that there are over 400 descendants
in Australia.………we believe you and your family are among
them.
A small group of Derwent descendents has been talking for some time about organising a family reunion in October 2002 (long weekend) to commemorate this important anniversary. More importantly it will allow all descendants of the diverse branches of the family to meet and share their family memories and add to them through other members they will meet.
As a steering Committee our aim initially is to get
the ball rolling and particularly get a guage on how many of the
“family” will be interested in a reunion.

Our research shows that there are over 400

believe you and your family are among them.
Our plan is that bi-monthy, and closer to
the reunion, monthly newsletters will be forwarded to family members. It is envisaged that a
complete family history will be produced, together with photos and anecdotes of
the family for current and future generations to know the history of the
family.
We have started to put together quite a
range of old photographs and documents, letters, etc and hope to gather many
more before the reunion.
Family members we have managed to contact
have shown considerable support and enthusiasm for the idea. We hope you will also be excited
and come and join the party.
